Lake Greifen: water temperature & trends

Water temperature at 1 m depth

11.8 °C

Latest available model value · Nov 8, 2026, 2:00 PM

Modelled by Alplakes / Eawag (Simstrat), not measured at a bathing spot. Wind, proximity to shore and water depth can cause local temperatures to differ.

How modelled water temperature changes from the surface to the lake bed. The profile makes the thermocline and cold deep water visible.

How to read: the vertical axis is water depth (surface at the top, deeper going down), the horizontal axis is temperature. In summer the water is warm at the surface and colder with depth; the zone where the temperature drops quickly is the thermocline. Values come from the Alplakes (Eawag) lake model and are modelled, not measured on site.

Surface versus deepest layer

In the current profile, Lake Greifen's surface is 11.6 °C, 6.3 °C warmer than the deepest displayed model layer at 31.00 m (5.3 °C). The profile therefore shows a clear decrease in temperature with depth.

Across 32 calculated depth layers, the modelled temperature ranges from 5.3 °C to 11.6 °C. The full curve shows where the largest transition occurs; surface and deep values alone would not describe that layering.

The depth is the deepest layer returned by the Simstrat model, not a newly surveyed maximum depth of the lake. The profile describes a modelled lake state, not the temperature at a particular bathing site.

Which temperature do we show?

Lake temperature comes from the Alplakes model at a depth of 1 m. Measurements at inflows and outflows describe a different location; they are not a second reading at the same bathing site.

Why do the values differ?

Wind, sunshine, depth and incoming water affect temperature. Different observation times are not directly comparable either. The annual comparison uses the relevant series; model output does not become historical sensor measurements. A temperature curve assesses neither hygienic water quality nor bathing safety.

Compared with previous years

Water temperature through the year, alongside the median and usual range from the 1981–2025 reference period. Modelled values at 1 m depth (Simstrat, Eawag).

How to read the chart: the thick line is the current year, the thin one the median of the 1981–2025 reference period. The shaded band shows the normal range (25th–75th percentile), the dotted lines the maximum and minimum. Values above the band are unusually high for the season, below unusually low – but not an official warning.

Air and water compared

Both curves on the same axis. The lake follows the air by weeks, barely varies from day to day and cools far more slowly in autumn.
