Understanding Rheintaler Binnenkanal

The Rheintaler Binnenkanal collects side streams and drainage water from the valley plain, reaching Lake Constance through the Old Rhine. It is not the neighbouring Alpine Rhine. Compare it with its own record: a small discharge relative to the Rhine says nothing about local flood risk.

This overview includes 2 monitoring stations for water level, discharge, and water temperature. Not every station provides every measurement. Track changes at the same station, checking the timestamp, unit and source notes.

Discharge in m³/s is a volume per second, not the speed of the current. Station comparisons must account for location, measurement time and water travel time. A higher reading is neither automatically a flood warning nor an indication that the river is navigable.

Monitoring locations and what they measure

These sites describe our monitoring coverage, not the river's entire length or catchment. The list is alphabetical.

  1. Rheintaler Binnenkanal, St. Margrethen (inflow)

  2. Rheintaler Binnenkanal, Widnau (inflow)

Specialist sources explain the background. Current readings and timestamps are on the linked measurement pages.
