The lake in its landscape
Lake Constance comprises the Obersee and Untersee and links Switzerland, Germany and Austria. Its large volume smooths an isolated shower without making it weather-independent. The catchment extends deep into the Alps, so the level can change markedly even without exceptional rain along the shore.
The path of the water
The Alpine Rhine supplies most inflow, supplemented by rivers including the Bregenzerach and Argen. At Constance the water becomes the Seerhein and later the High Rhine after the Untersee. The lake retains water and sediment, so an Alpine Rhine wave does not reappear unchanged at the outlet.
Annual cycle and management
The natural cycle usually rises with snowmelt and early-summer rain before falling towards winter. Unlike most large Swiss lakes, it has no regulating weir. Outflow depends mainly on level and the geometry of the Seerhein, making seasonal departures a direct expression of a vast catchment's water balance.
How to read the measurements
Levels at Romanshorn, Constance and the Untersee may differ briefly because of wind setup, location and datum. A continuous record from one station is therefore better for trends than arbitrary snapshots. Hazard levels come from authorities; a trend colour on Seepegel is not an official warning.
Temperature and depth
Shallow bays, the open Obersee and the Untersee can differ greatly. Sun warms the surface, wind mixes it and rivers add cooler water while the whole volume responds slowly. Swimmers should use a nearby surface reading and also check local water-quality advice.
