The lake in its landscape

Lake Brienz lies in the Bernese Oberland at about 564 metres above sea level. It is a natural basin, not a lake created by a dam. Its catchment reaches far into the high Alps; the FOEN station at Ringgenberg lists an area of 1,137 square kilometres. Understanding the level therefore means looking beyond shoreline weather to the extensive mountain area upstream.

The path of the water

The Aare and Lütschine are the main inflows, and the Aare leaves again towards Lake Thun. Their upstream histories differ: the upper Aare is strongly influenced by Kraftwerke Oberhasli and the Grimsel reservoirs, whereas the Lütschine arrives largely unaffected by such interventions. About 2.6 kilometres downstream of the lake, two cantonal sluices and two small hydropower plants influence outflow.

Annual cycle and management

Monthly averages for 1991–2025 show a pronounced annual cycle: 563.30 metres above sea level in February compared with 564.29 in July. During winter low flows, regulation prevents an excessive fall in the lake. Its influence during floods is more limited because the natural outlet can carry only so much water. Even open sluices therefore cannot provide unlimited control over the level.

How to read the measurements

Brienzersee–Ringgenberg station 2023 measures the elevation of the water surface, not water depth. Aare and Lütschine curves add context, but discharge measures a different quantity: water volume per second. Meaningful comparisons therefore require matching timestamps and checking units. Subtracting two lake levels gives a change in height, not directly the additional volume stored in the lake.

Temperature and depth

The cantonal report describes a cool, nutrient-poor lake with low plankton production. Depth profiles reveal more than a single surface temperature: mild winters can weaken mixing, while summer stratification lasts longer. Complete mixing did not occur every year in the past either. Comfortable water at the shore therefore says little about temperatures and oxygen conditions in the depths.
