The lake in its landscape

Lake Lugano, also known as the Ceresio, extends across Ticino and Italy's Lombardy region. It consists of the northern basin, including Lugano Bay and the arm towards Porlezza, the southern basin beyond the Melide causeway, and the small Ponte Tresa basin. The narrow passage at Lavena gives this layout hydrological significance: the basins are connected, but their water levels need not be identical during a flood.

The path of the water

The Vedeggio feeds the southern basin near Agno, while the Tresa carries water towards Lake Maggiore. A weir at Ponte Tresa regulates the outgoing discharge. The capacity of the Lavena passage matters too: during floods, water can build up upstream, reaching a higher level than in the Ponte Tresa basin. A large expanse of water should therefore not be mistaken for unlimited flood storage; the Federal Office for the Environment highlights its limited retention capacity.

Annual cycle and management

Heavy rainfall episodes in spring and autumn are particularly relevant to flooding. Regulation does not aim for one fixed level throughout the year: the planned release depends on the season and the level measured at Ponte Tresa. Where suitable flood forecasts are available, an increased advance release can create extra storage. Both lakeside communities and areas along the Tresa must be considered. A higher discharge may therefore reflect a preventive operating decision; it does not, by itself, explain the weather conditions.

How to read the measurements

Follow the same station over time before comparing readings from different basins. During a flood, the levels at Melide and Ponte Tresa can legitimately differ; timestamps and elevation references must also be comparable. Tresa discharge measures a volume per second, not the height of the lake surface. A seasonal median places each measurement series in its historical context. It is neither the operating target nor an official warning threshold, and cannot replace observations of differences between the basins.

Temperature and depth

On a lake with several basins, a single temperature needs careful interpretation. It describes water at the stated location and depth, not Lugano Bay, the Porlezza arm and the Ponte Tresa basin all at once. Comparing two values therefore also means checking how and when they were measured. A nearby observation is more useful for a bathing location than an undifferentiated temperature for the entire Ceresio. Whether the water meets bathing hygiene requirements is a matter for the relevant testing programme, not temperature alone.
