Lake Murten

The smallest of the three Jura lakes connects the Broye catchment to Lake Neuchâtel. Its level also reflects water beyond its own catchment.

The lake in its landscape

Lake Murten lies between the cantons of Fribourg and Vaud, below Mont Vully. Unlike a lake surrounded by high Alpine terrain, its catchment mainly extends into the rolling Swiss Plateau. Farmland and settlements influence its tributaries. Understanding where the water comes from helps explain rainfall events, nutrient inputs and differences from the large Alpine lakes.

The path of the water

The Broye is the main inflow. The Arbogne and Petite Glâne join it around Salavaux, so their water reaches the lake through the Broye; the Chandon is another lake tributary. At Sugiez, the Broye Canal leads to Lake Neuchâtel. For a water balance, adding tributaries to a Broye reading taken below their confluences would count some of the same water twice.

Annual cycle and management

Lake Murten responds to more than rain in the Broye catchment. The canal links it hydraulically to Lake Neuchâtel and thus to the shared regulation at Port. If the neighbouring lake rises strongly, outflow can be impeded or the canal's flow can reverse. A prolonged level rise does not therefore necessarily mean unusually heavy rain immediately around Lake Murten.

How to read the measurements

Location and flow direction are essential when comparing stations: the Broye upstream describes an inflow, while the canal at Sugiez describes the link to the neighbouring lake. Low outflow alongside a rising level may reflect backwater effects. Simultaneous curves for both lakes and the tributaries help explain the situation. Lake elevation above sea level is neither water depth nor the distance below a particular bank.

Temperature and depth

Summer warmth at the surface is only part of the ecological picture. Under stable stratification, deep water receives less oxygen, while the breakdown of dead algae consumes it. In 2020, the canton of Fribourg therefore identified further reductions in phosphorus inputs as necessary. This is a long-term assessment, not a current swimming clearance or bathing-ban notice. Today's local notices are the relevant guide for those decisions.
