The lake in its landscape
Lake Zug lies between the Zugerberg, Rigi and the Swiss Plateau. Its northern basin is shallower than the south. The relationship between volume and flows makes change slow: the lake responds to accumulated weather across its catchment, not merely the latest shower over Zug.
The path of the water
The Lorze links Lake Ägeri to Lake Zug and leaves again at Cham, with smaller streams adding water. Because flows are modest relative to lake volume, drought or persistent rain can have effects lasting weeks. One tributary reading shows only part of that balance.
Annual cycle and management
The Lorze weir at Cham influences outflow according to seasonal targets, but its low capacity gives only limited control of the level. During strong inflows the lake rises even with the weir open. The present structure dates from 1943; regulation has existed since 1592.
How to read the measurements
A few centimetres can be visible on shallow shores without automatically indicating danger. The seasonal position and persistence of a trend matter. Lorze discharge in m³/s adds context but must not be confused with lake elevation above sea level.
Temperature and depth
In summer, a warm surface layer sits above cooler deep water. Wind, cloud and inflows change the surface quickly while the lake's heat store responds slowly. Temperature therefore belongs to a place and depth and cannot on its own describe water quality.
