01

The lake in its landscape

Lake Maggiore extends from Ticino far into Italy and forms a large store at the southern edge of the Alps. Its catchment is large relative to the lake and reaches very wet mountain areas. Southern Alpine weather can therefore deliver substantial water even when little rain falls at the shore being observed.

02

The path of the water

The Ticino, Maggia and Toce are major inflows; the Ticino leaves again at Sesto Calende. Alpine reservoirs affect the timing of individual tributaries. The lake smooths short peaks, but several wet days across the catchment can produce a pronounced, sustained rise.

03

Annual cycle and management

Snowmelt, heavy southern rainfall and evaporation shape the year. Outflow is also managed at the Miorina dam within seasonal bands. Regulation can influence fluctuations but cannot cancel exceptional inflows: the complete balance of inflow, rainfall, evaporation and outflow remains decisive.

04

How to read the measurements

Stations at Locarno, Brissago and in Italy may use different gauge datums. Values from different portals must not be subtracted without checking their reference. Seepegel keeps unit, station and source visible. Trend and seasonal context are usually more robust than a raw centimetre comparison between networks.

05

Temperature and depth

The large, deep basin stores heat for a long time. Surface values still respond to sun, wind and inflows; river plumes may be cooler and more turbid after heavy rain. Bathing comparisons need location and depth, and a surface model is not a direct measurement at every beach.
