Landscape and water pathways
The Steiner Aa enters the western basin and brings sediment during floods. The 1806 Goldau landslide reduced the lake. Water lilies, reeds and fens line its shores; observe protected areas and local paths when visiting.
What makes this lake distinctive
The unregulated lake stores water naturally. Its shallow basin differs from deep Alpine lakes: along low shores, a level change can visibly move the waterline. A low average depth does not make an elevated level harmless.
What the readings tell you
The canton gives a maximum depth of 13 metres and a mean depth of six metres. These are references, not current depths at a shoreline. Level, temperature and nutrient status answer different questions; track the same monitoring station over time.
